Hurricane Eta wreaked havoc in the Central American country of Guatemala. According to Chinese media, Guatemalan President Alejandro Giametti told a news conference that more than 150 people were feared dead due to heavy rains, floods and landslides caused by the typhoon.
He said that more than 75,000 people have been affected by landslides and floods. The President said that many people in the affected areas have refused to leave their homes despite the severe floods. The Caribbean coast of northern Nicaragua was devastated and torrential rains flooded Nicaragua, Honduras, Guatemala, Costa Rica, El Salvador and Panama, officials said. Rapid relief operations are underway.
Heavy rains have damaged roads, making it difficult to reach victims, and rescue teams are evacuating people. Landslides in Honduras have disrupted traffic and severely affected the country's second-largest city, San Pedro Sola. At the behest of President Juan Orlando Hernandez, the army is conducting rescue operations in the capital, Tegucigalpa, by helicopter and boat. Aid agencies say 330,000 people in northern Honduras have been affected by the floods, with many more trapped on rooftops.
Officials said the floods and strong winds had uprooted trees and power poles and disrupted power supply in adjoining areas, while highways were damaged and access to the victims was difficult.
