The Sindh High Court heard a petition regarding keeping fake prisoners in the jails of the province in which the Home Department, IG Prisons and AIG Legal submitted a report to the court.
The report revealed that biometric system is not functional in any of the jails in the province, so far only meetings and planning are being done for biometrics.
The report of I Prisons also said that first 7 jails of Karachi, Hyderabad and Sukkur are being upgraded. There are no staff and computers in 5 jails including Hyderabad and Nowshero Feroze.
The court has summoned the Sindh Home Secretary in person while the petitioner has been directed to file reply on the report of the Sindh government.
Barrister Shehryar Mehr, counsel for the Sindh government, told the court that a modern system of biometrics of prisoners was being installed in Sindh jails, after which prisoners would be monitored in all the jails with a modern system.
Shehryar Mehr further said that in the past, other people were kept in jail for many years through forgery. After the installation of modern technology, forgery will not allow anyone to be imprisoned.
Justice Muhammad Ali Mazhar said that you are the stakeholders and Sindh and the people of Sindh will benefit. The purpose of summoning the officers to the court is to get help so that the case can go in the right direction.
It should be noted that in 2013, Ansar Burney Trust had filed a petition in the Sindh High Court regarding fake prisoners in the jails of the province.
The court also sought a progress report from NADRA and adjourned the hearing till November 26.
